The digital era has changed the game. With data and AI, it takes just a few minutes and clicks for computers and algorithms to dial into our preconceived beliefs, push us further down a myopic viewpoint, and further polarize parties (Check out this incredible WSJ deep dive on the Tik Tok algorithm).
Reuniting our country requires aligning on the problem we are solving and agreeing to the constraints we must adhere to. Said differently, it requires starting debates with a foundation of less contentious, sustainable principles that don’t divide the country from the onset. From this [hopefully] more neutral foundation we can debate specific policy. The price of entry, however is intellectual curiosity, research, and independent thought - it is amazing how much information is out there and how significantly it can change perspectives when we are willing to look beyond a headline, emotional story, or party rhetoric. The best answer is probably in the middle and both sides must be willing to listen, learn, and compromise to get there.
This site was created in an attempt to help outline principles for some of the most polarizing issues in our country. Hopefully the principles reaffirm one another and were written from a non-partisan perspective but regardless, these principles are just a starting place. Help make them better - if you have suggestions, I would love to hear from you.
We should not be naive, governing and living via principles is hard: it will take work, lobbyists will be mad, others will try to guilt from positions, and party loyalties may be challenged. Uniting and advancing the country, however, requires principle-based policy and action, not anecdote driven rhetoric or blind loyalties.
Let’s hold ourselves to a higher standard and demand our politicians compromise on a logical, sustainable government!
